Why Battery Life Matters in the Field
For portable printer users, running out of battery mid-shift isn't just inconvenient — it can halt operations, delay deliveries, and frustrate customers. Getting the most from every charge is a practical operational concern.
Here are 10 techniques that consistently extend battery life across our FC-P Series.
Print Settings
1. Use Draft Mode for Internal Documents
Draft mode reduces ink usage and print head passes, cutting energy consumption by up to 30% per page. Use it for internal copies, working documents, and anything that doesn't go to a customer.
2. Lower Print Resolution When Appropriate
For barcode and text-only output, 200 DPI is indistinguishable from 300 DPI to the naked eye — but uses significantly less power.
3. Batch Your Jobs
Printing 20 labels consecutively uses less power than 20 separate single-label print jobs, because the printer stays in an active warm state rather than cycling through sleep/wake.
Connectivity
4. Use Bluetooth Instead of Wi-Fi When Possible
Bluetooth consumes approximately 60% less power than Wi-Fi. If your workflow allows direct device-to-printer connection, prefer Bluetooth.
5. Disable Wi-Fi When Not Needed
If your printer is connected to a mobile device via Bluetooth, turn off Wi-Fi entirely in the device settings. A radio that's on but idle still draws power.
Physical Habits
6. Let the Printer Sleep
Configure auto-sleep to activate after 2–3 minutes of inactivity. The default 10-minute timeout wastes significant battery on an active shift.
7. Keep the Printer at Operating Temperature
Battery performance drops sharply below 10°C. In cold environments, keep the printer in an insulated bag when not in active use.
8. Charge to 80%, Not 100% (for long-term storage)
If the printer will sit unused for more than two weeks, charge to around 80% before storing. Full charge degrades lithium batteries faster over time.
Maintenance
9. Run the Nozzle Check Monthly
Clogged nozzles force the print head to make extra passes, wasting both ink and battery. A monthly nozzle check and clean keeps the head performing efficiently.
10. Keep Firmware Updated
FirstColor firmware updates frequently include power optimisation improvements. Check for updates via the FirstColor app — updates are free and take under five minutes.
Following these 10 habits typically extends effective battery life by 25–40% in real-world field conditions. For questions about your specific model, contact our support team.
